This year’s prom was successfully hosted on March 23rd, with attendances from different classes in high school. The night was fun and entertaining. Most of you however have never seen what happens behind the prom. Many people worked for the event, and many things were done before hand to make it a success. The conversation about prom began late November last year, and took about half year to prepare. In this article, I am going to share a little about the back story and steps that made prom happen. The most important element in the prom is the place that we were hosting the event. Since student council was responsible for the event, the members took it upon themselves to research different locations. There were mainly four options. Intercontinental, Shangri-La, Kilin Hotel, and Crown Plaza. Because the prom last year happened at Crown Plaza, this year the student council tried its best to find another place. However, Intercontinental, Kilin hotel was ruled out for different reasons such as the price, attitude, etc. Later, Shangri-La was ruled out because of the traffic, leaving members with no option but to host it again at Crown Plaza. We consulted the manager, and rented a bigger and nicer room with better meal options and a Karaoke machine. During the process, student council members visited all of the hotels one by one, and listed all different pros and cons, and after discussions at the meeting, settled on The Crown Plaza. We then started to plan the theme and activities. Activities are an important part of the event. After several meetings with teachers we decided that this year, we are doing a casino theme. There were a lot of preparations needed before the prom, including the rollers, chips, pokers, and more. We eventually purchased all of the items on the internet, and shipped it to school. We followed the tradition of the school with the pushups and speeches to the seniors and decided to have teachers host different activities, including poker and blackjack. The last step in the prom was the ticket sales. This year, we spent roughly 12000 renting the place, and more on the drinks and chips. Student council decided, as a group that the price will be 150 RMB for QISS students, and 200 RMB for others. Student council didn't make any profits, from the prom, but managed to break even which was a big accomplishment when compared to previous years. At the end, prom was hosted successfully with the help from teachers, and student council members. Personally, I feel that this is a very successful event, with many participation. The feed-backs from students also showed that all the hard work paid off and the event was a successful. It always helps remember that there are many people working for an event and as a participant, you may not see those things, but many things were done to organize an event, and host it successfully. We are glad that you got to have a good time and hope that the Student Council continues their great work. I personally believed that student council’s members worked together really well to make this happen, and I would love to personally congratulate them for their great work. *Differences of proms between the countries, continent, Europe, America and Asia
Europe In the U.K, the seniors often dance in the prom which is called a “school disco” started from the 1970s. It often deed at the end of the ceremony. Though it has no any meaning, it is interested by the most students. In Germany, students usually organize some activities that tend to make fun of teachers, or do some speech about their favorite teachers. It’s impressing, whereas I surprisingly found that alcohol is available at these events since the legal drinking age in Germany is 16. America In the United States, some high schools only allow Senior to have a prom. Some schools also allow juniors to hold a prom, and select high schools even hold proms for freshmen and sophomores. Asia In India and Nepal, the alike to some extent is a farewell party or farewell gathering. The outgoing students are given a warm send-off by the junior students and staff. All the seniors are felicitated with souvenirs and superlatives are given awards. I think we should study those traditions for having more fun in the prom. Last year's prom - We all had to be dressed up like suit or dress or whatever. Most of the senior attended the prom, also some of high school students and even 6 middle school students because there weren’t prescribed number of people. After arrived there, we just sat on our seats and some minutes later, we started the dinner. And when we almost ate dinner, Junior and some high school students read their letters to seniors. And then we had 3 activities which were following dances, pop balloons, and push-ups. - Thus, we did some interview some people who went to last year prom. Beforehand interview----We randomly chose some participants to talk about the prom. 1. Denali: “I’m not sure whom I will go with. I expect there would be some interesting activities to enjoy, because the prom last year was so boring. I only thought when I could go home during the whole party. I was really sad about that.” 2. Alex: “I will go to the prom with Soo Jeong. In the ceremony, I want to watch them dancing, especially Mr. P’s dancing ;)” 3. Kian: “I will go to the prom alone this year, and I don’t expect anything exciting because last year’s prom was pretty unsatisfactory, especially the food. I hope there will be some really interesting activities and tasty food. I wish this year’s will be the greatest one.” 4. Rose:” I will go there with my friend from another school, and same as Kian, I expect there will be much more delicious food than last year’s. For games, I want to play the actual casino :) Moreover, I want really nice music to listen there!” Mr. Thorpe prohibited the students below grade 9 to go to the prom, so some students are waiting for the next year’s prom now. Audrey: “Though I feel a little disappointed, I don’t really care about it. Now, I expect to go to the prom next year! If my friends plan to participate, of course I’m going. I will wear pretty dress, play interesting games, and dance. Just like a party!” We also asked Mr. Thorpe,”Mr. Thorpe, why can’t the students below grade 9 go to the prom?” “I think the prom in QISS is for Junior and Senior students. However, because we don’t have enough people to join in, we extend the limitation for upper school students. For the students below grade 9, I think they are too young to join the upper school ceremony. Although only one year gap between grade 9 and 8, the seniors are 5 years older than them. I consider that the students below grade 9 would not really be involved in the prom. This is why I prevent them to go to the prom.” So, most of the people who went to prom last year was bored and was not fun. They expect more fun activities and stuff for this year prom. As they said, school counselors prepared a lot for this year prom. You will see next time! For more details about the science week, download the file here:
Spelling BeeDuring the Festival of Words, many QISS students positively participated in the Spelling Bee event. Though there were many hard words for students to learn, all of the participants worked very hard in studying them. Without worry, the school's purpose was celebrated that the students join the event very actively and paid their valuable time to deal with it. Eventually, the intention of the Spelling Bee was perfectly made. At the end, the thirteen finalists showed great sportsmanship at this competition. The Spelling Bee contest was done successfully with Anna coming in as the winner for Lower School, Coby for the Middle School and James for High School.
